Applewood set for lobby upgrade
Modernization to mark building’s 33rd anniversary

The white façade and the unusual Y shape have made Applewood Place a Mississauga landmark since it was built 33 years ago by the Shipp Corp.
It first opened its doors in 1974 and has evolved from high-end rental apartments that were ahead of their time to luxurious, energy-saving condominiums.
Now this building – winner of the prestigious Canadian Housing Design Award in 1974 – is celebrating its anniversary with a lobby modernization that includes a new ramp that will improve accessibility.
On. Jan. 30 – 33 years to the day Applewood Place opened – a formal ceremony in honour of the ramp took place. Developer Harold Shipp, who opened the doors originally, was on hand to cut the ribbon.
Applewood Place has retained many of its original residents, who bought their suites when it became a condominium in 1996; so this anniversary will be a time to share stories and gather as a community.
Condo owner Glenna Somerville, who has lived in the building since 1991, considers herself lucky to have been able to get in at Applewood as a renter during a time of waiting lists.
“It was very, very nice when I moved in,” recalls Somerville, who still lives in her original 1,105-square-foot suite. “When it was an apartment building, Applewood Place was extremely elegant for its time. The desk would call up if someone visited, which was rare for an apartment.”
Somerville says that when it was converted to condominiums, the building was really updated, with the redone lobby – “almost like walking into a four-star hotel.”
She likes the large rooms, which she says feel more like those of a house than a condo tower. She also likes the fact that Applewood Place was built on four hectares of land so that nothing can be built around it.
“Quite a few people have been here a long time and it seems more homey than a condo,” she says. “Everyone acknowledges everyone, so you don’t ever feel like a stranger.
