One Brand New Condo Emphasizes Technology
Technological marvels in store for CityPlace buyers It’s a sign of the times that purchasers of CityPlace condominiums will be given lessons on how to live there, as this downtown project will have the latest in wiring, technological aids. Welcome to Toronto’s newest neighbourhood. It’s a digital neighbourhood that adds a technological twist to cocooning.
Do you have the munchies? Head to your computer or TV set and a few clicks of the mouse, depending on how many ingredients you want, will get you a pizza. Feeling nostalgic and you want to relive Woodstock, but it’s snowy outside? Chances are you will be able to order the movie or any other Hollywood classic and not leave your den.
The largest residential development in the history of Toronto, the $1.5 billion CityPlace project in the shadows of the CN tower, is a few years into a 10-year plan to build 20 towers for 6,000 residents.
It will also be the most technologically advanced community in the country, thanks to a $30-million investment in wiring, gizmos and gadgets by Telus, Western Canada’s equivalent to Ma Bell.
So much so that Telus offers digital training and instruction sessions to purchasers and will be on hand to assist residents when they begin moving in this year. They’ll be doing this in a store in the commercial complex, which opens early next month. It will also sell phones and other accessories.
And one of the major tasks, according to CityPlace officials, is to make the neighbourhood experience as user-friendly as possible. Although they realize that many residents will not be technologically inclined, the goal is to try and portray this as a friendly way to enhance your life, and not just a future for the technology geek.
The backbone of all this is fibre optic cabling throughout the buildings that will offer surfing speeds of 100 mbps, up to 50 times more than what you’re getting now. All suites will be pre-wired so that all you need to do is plug in your computer for a Local Area Network to get online and share peripherals such as printers.
Every unit will be equipped with a virtual concierge called VIC, accessed by going to a URL in a Web browser, that can be used to book recreational facilities and meeting rooms, access community updates and learn about CityPlace events, as well as rent those digital videos that you can pause, fast forward and rewind.
The concierge will also include a monitoring system that enables residents to view key locations throughout the complex such as the front entranceway, lobby, swimming pool and garage. Residents will also be able to see these locations from any computer by going to a password-protected site.
Starchoice will offer more than 100 channels of TV and music and Telus will provide the telephone service.
