Toronto’s Chocolate Lofts

Loft conversion projects take amazing old buildings and rejuvenate them, under the guidance of a developer with some vision. Lofts have grown in popularity because there’s nothing quite like living in an unconventional loft space, surrounded by old-world workmanship in a space infused with a century of activity. As a younger city, Toronto has a very limited selection of warehouse and factory buildings in community neighbourhoods, so when it comes to doing a loft conversion project, it’s difficult to find a great historic building in a great location.

However, Paul Jacobs, President of Precision Capital, with partner Plazacorp Developments, scouted out an excellent opportunity in the former Patterson Chocolate Company head office on Queen West at Crawford.

Overlooking Trinity Bellwoods Park, on a very social and fashionable part of Queen West, the Chocolate Co. Lofts couldn’t be more choice.

“This impressive loft conversion integrates the existing buildings with a new addition, resulting in a spectacular selection of both brand new and historic lofts,” says Jacobs.

The existing Victorian buildings are well matched by a brand new glass Bauhaus structure linking the two existing historic buildings, resulting in a very elegant facade. Not only is it a beautiful building, but it ingratiates itself into the neighbourhood style and architecture seamlessly.

In its heyday, when the Patterson Chocolate Company was up and running, Queen Street was the centre of the city; to area residents it still is. Stores line the streets; the TTC streetcars run 24 hours; the area is full of character, and day or night – there is always something hip and happening going on. There are boutiques that range from the independent designers to elegant international names. There are restaurants that satisfy any craving, from eggs-over-easy to oysters Rockefeller.

When not wandering down Queen window shopping, the huge Trinity Bellwoods Park across the street is the perfect place to unwind. Walking or jogging, playing frisbee or baseball, it’s a neighbourhood haven and unofficial dog park. Very friendly, the area residents often bring out their pooches to play with each other. The new Trinity Bellwoods Community Centre at the west side of the park offers workout facilities, basketball courts, all kinds of classes, and has a great swimming pool. Several yoga studios are within blocks. Everything and everywhere downtown is either within walking distance or just a quick cab ride away. And highway access and GO Transit are just to the south.

Then think about coming home to the Chocolate Co. Lofts, the name just melts in your mouth. Can you help thinking back to your childhood dreams of living in Candyland? Well, this is the big kid version, which includes every decadent desire you have for your home.

Lofts have become a great new alternative to the average condo suite. Add to that the qualities that only a loft conversion project can offer, and the results are unusually large windows, ceilings that can soar upwards of 12 feet, a great mix of structural exposed and raw materials like wood, concrete, brick and steel, exposed pipes and ducts, and a general feeling of your home having heritage and personality.

As for the actual spaces, the various designs of the Chocolate Co. Lofts allow lofters to decide exactly how much space they need, and how they need the space arranged and designed. Whether it’s an open studio; a space that allows for a bedroom and a home office; or a sprawling two-bedroom-plus-den with a bright living/dining room for entertaining, The Chocolate Lofts offers spaces to accommodate your lifestyle.

The Chocolate Company Lofts have been designed with modern living and modern needs in mind. Computers and electronics are protected by a pre-installed surge protector. There’s a private individual storage locker that is included with your loft, the condo version of attic/basement storage, because really, no matter how much room, there’s never enough room for your stuff.

A large, equipped exercise area means you can work out on your own time in the comfort of your own home. The Serenity courtyard offers a place to hang out and relax, while a separate private courtyard is available for summer parties. For entertaining everyone and their uncle, there’s a party room available featuring a kitchenette, a serving bar, billiards table and big screen TV – perfect for hosting a Superbowl party or a movie night.

Beauty, style, history, and location make The Chocolate Co. Lofts an exciting option. Quality is a given considering Plazacorp’s reputation; proven over and over in the numerous loft conversion and condominium projects they’ve constructed in Toronto.
