Torontonian heritage buffs got the chance to hear how the major mayoral candidates would protect the city’s historical sites during a debate at St. Lawrence Hall.

Emerald Park, a large mixed used condo project on Yonge St. just south of Sheppard Ave., is going ahead, thanks to a deal struck between the original developer, Bazis International, and two others.

OCAD — which in June was granted university status — has grown a fair bit lately, expanding its domain beyond the McCaul St. corridor to include the purchase of three buildings along Richmond St. in what is Toronto’s dwindling club zone.

Torontonians are often embarrassed by the amount of concrete in our city. Viewed as cheap and bland, to many contemporary eyes it seems like an ugly reminder of what replaced the quaint Victorian homes, office buildings and warehouses that were torn down in the 60s and 70s to make way for it.

Thinking big, Waterfront Toronto last week revealed its choice of Houston-based Hines, one of the world’s foremost real estate firms, to handle this development. The project’s lead architect is Cesar Pelli, former dean of the Yale University School of Architecture and designer of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. And he seems to have the right vision for this district.
