Academy Lane Lofts - 1852 Queen Street East (near Woodbine)
A former Armory from the early 20th century, this building has also housed a Boxing Club and a popular community bowling alley. It is one of the only loft conversions in the Beaches. It was developed as a new building in 2003 but it integrated the older building as a part of its modern construction. The building features exposed beam construction on the 3rd floor mezzanine ceilings, solid wood entrance doors with polished chrome hardware, gourmet kitchens and a unique stacking parking system.
Academy Lane Lofts gets its name from its former use as the Academy Lane Bowling alley. Located on Queen Street East just west of Woodbine Avenue in the Beach, it rises 4-storeys and houses twelve very unique single and multi-level lofts. Essentially, the Academy Lane Lofts is a new building on top of an older two-storey building. Developed in 2003 by Streetcar Developments, the lofts range from 863 to 1,701 square feet and many feature a balcony or terrace.
Originally built in 1913, the structure at 1852 Queen Street East was once part of the East Ford sales and service station. Owner William Humphries Moore turned it into a bowling alley and dance academy in 1923. Moore had emigrated from Ireland with his 10 children and originally lived in the west end of the city. The stonemason, who worked on Toronto's Old City Hall, moved to the Beaches in 1906.
The lofts feature exposed beam construction, oversized windows, and gourmet kitchens with granite countertops. Academy Lane Lofts is the first condo building in fifteen years to use an innovative stacked parking system. Toronto really needs more quality infill developments like this.
