Authentic Toronto Hard Loft Conversions Medical College Lofts - 289 Sumach Street The former Ontario Medical College for Women, most of the original 1890 facade has been maintained. These lofts on Sumach are located at Gerrard Street East and Parliament, in south Cabbagetown. The history of Women's College Hospital begins in 1883 with the founding of Woman's Medical College. This came in response to the refusal of medical schools in Toronto to admit women for the study of medicine. Less than six months after this meeting, on October 1, 1883, Toronto Mayor A.R. Boswell formally opened Woman's Medical College, at 289 Sumach Street. In 1935, the hospital moved to its present location at 76 Grenville Street, located close to the University of Toronto. It was 10-storeys tall with 140 beds and 45 infant cots. The hospital was officially opened February 22, 1936 by His Excellency, Lord Tweedsmuir, Governor-General of Canada. By 1936, Women's College Hospital had carved out a niche for itself as a leader in women's health care in Canada. (Both of our children were born at Women's College Hospital) Originally constructed in 1898 as the Ontario Medical College for Women, this historically significant and now designated Romanesque Revival building had fallen on hard times by the early 80's, enduring a series of industrial uses, most recently as a machine shop. Purchased in 1983, the facades were restored according to 1898 photographs from a medical calendar discovered behind the original baseboards, and the interiors were transformed into ten multi-storey loft residences, internally maintaining elements of both its historical and industrial precedents. In the Medical College Lofts (also called the Sumach Lofts), the ceilings are very high (up to 15 feet). Layouts range from single-storey to multi-storey lofts and sizes range from 800 - 2,000 square feet. Many Medical College Lofts units have private terrace/decks and some have skylights, exposed wood ceilings, beams and brick. 289 Sumach Street is a very affordable loft alternative in the downtown area.
